Artist Statement: Forsaken Memories
I’ve chosen to do this series on old abandoned buildings that time has left behind (including one that still functions in the present), as each of them lifts a particular moment out of time, removing it from it’s context to express an emotion or feeling through the topic itself, as well as through the use of colors.
For me, the series convey the essence of another time and curiosity, as it often asks more questions than it answers, which is fascinating to me. It shrouds in mystery and makes one wonder about who inhabited it before and what lurks behind the shadows as it becomes a feast for the imagination. Each painting can interpret the past by viewing it within the context of the present day, as it reflects the present in the warmth of the sun splashing through the windows and the lush and colorful garden. It seems to say that everything related to the architecture is history, it’s soul, it’s identity are all trapped within the buildings, suspended in the dark shadows and broken chair of its past, while life is present day outside it. It reminds me that nothing is everlasting and to treasure every moment of life and see deeply into the present. There is so much beauty in old and ruined objects, whether it’s the fascinating textures and colors of a stressed wall, or just the building style in itself. In a sense we are expressing the story of another time within the context of our choosing. The series therefore, explore the past, link it to the present, and preserve both for the future, as they truly overcome the limits of our memories.
