Artist Statement: “Geometric Illusions” Series
For this series I mainly used grids, and/or geometrical patterns, which developed through extensive exploration with different mediums and techniques. I’ve used repetitive patterns to convey a sense of eternity, and the intent is to take the viewer to a place that reflects a state of endless duration and uninterrupted existence.
I love introducing the interplay of colors into my work. I repeatedly draw; scrape, paint, and scratch onto the surfaces to the point where materials and subject matter become completely integrated and unknown. I enhance the impression by creating a 3D effect with the use of epoxy layers and sometimes resin “dewdrops” to distort and magnify the image below, which helps to create an eventual sense of accumulation and depth. In addition, the surface results in surface which shifts depending on our movement, our position and the disposition of light in the room. The work confuses and transcends the distinction between viewer and object by resonating shadows cast on the wall ceiling and floor and in so doing takes on a life of its own. This experience becomes the criterion of coexistence and leaves space for the viewer to complete the interpretation.
Due to the physical differences between the above approaches, one's visual engagements are different, and therefore the work invites the opportunity for diverse experiences and the prospect for each viewer’s intuitive response. However the intent is to specifically create an impression of the endless duration of time.
