Artist Statement: Nature and the Sublime
I’m totally inspired by the greatness and beauty of nature together with the uncontrollable, primal forces, which are often referred to in terms of the “sublime,” inspiring horror as well as awe, which I’m aiming to express into visual representation.
The sublime is related as an extreme state beyond the limits of ordinary comprehension, and affects the mind with a sense of overwhelming grandeur or irresistible power. It is calculated to inspire awe, deep reverence, or lofty emotion, by reason of its beauty and vastness.
With this series I have accentuated the sublime by incorporating “contrast of extension”, where I’ve used large fields of color to show the vastness of nature, together with “Synecdoche” in which only a part of nature is used to represent the whole. In some paintings I’ve done the unpredictable, where I’ve used extreme subjective colors, which aren’t classically associated with nature at all, or worked on thin and tall vertical format canvasses as suppose to the expected horizontal formats to add an element of surprise and interest.
I mainly used oil, which I’ve applied in glazes, mostly as a whole, but sometimes as part of a painting, where I used extremely thin paint to build my colors and tones slowly, leaving the paint to dry completely between each glaze, allowing me to add a lot of depth and special effects in a very discrete way.
